bean block interruption

Today while attempting to finish the pillow cover I started yesterday, I had many more than usual interruptions. First, there were songs that needed to be sung..."it' s a beautiful day in the neighborhood.." (( I love mr. rogers)), she tried out a bit of her photographic perspective with my camera phone, and there was a whole lot of "look at me!" As she -scoots across the floor seated on top of big brothers gi Joe size wooden hummer, giving her doll a ride around the house, who knew it was actually a ride-on toy? Then she spies the buttons and all else is forgotten. Oh so fun to work your fingers through, rise up into the air with a hearty fist full and listen to the satisfactory clinking cascade as they fall back into the box. But wait, I casually toss an empty felt container up next to her, wasting no time at all she begins to fill the new container...mostly missing.. and hitting the table top instead. Then, I swear I could see the lightbulb go on, as she completely bypassed my little "suggestion" of a game, and dumps everything out onto the table."Look mommy, its like snow!" Yes, and as close to it as we can get this winter, anyway
:)
So by now I'm completely distracted and grab a square of wool to make another little felt container for her games, which ended up being more like a shallow dish than a container,
When I thought, Hey!!! ..beanbags would be fun...Oooo and a little cube would be even better...so there you have it.
Now sometime today I plan on getting back to that pillow cover, but right now...I've got to get back to a very important game of catch.

a pistachio pillow

Branching out just a bit from the my usual three dimensional felted friends, I've been enjoying some good old fashioned embroidery lately.
Noticing that a certain little pillow that I so awesomely knitted a cover for quite a few years ago was never, and I mean never used, I wondered out loud to my youngest why was this? "Oh, because it' s soo itchy" ::wiggling uncomfortably:: conveying her point fully.
Nuff said, I wasted no time ripping those seams apart, and sending those precious knitted squares off to the wash to be cleaned and await there "itchy" destiny elsewhere. Then the real fun begins, selecting some soft hemp for the upper, a bit of an earthy print for the bottom, some leftover denim that was astoundingly the perfect fit for the back, and some vintage and thrifted buttons, I set to work seaming the pieces.
For the embroidery, I haven't had much luck with transfer pens and things like that instead I like to use tracing paper. So I sketched out a quick little sitting pistachio, traced the image onto tracing paper, cut it out and pinned it directly to the fabric. Then I sew right through the paper and once the design was complete just tore the paper away. With some vintage tapestry wool I free-hand embroidered the grass and leaves. This little pillow cover has been so much fun designing and creating now I know I have another blank pillow form somewhere around here..I'll let you know how the next one turns out :)

molasses taffy, take one!

A few weeks ago I picked up a wonderful assortment of cookbooks while thrifting and have been having a lot of fun trying out some new old recipes. See that can of milk there? I've had that very same can sitting on the counter.. well,... since before Christmas waiting patiently to become candy of some sort.
Motivation is very closely related to inspiration it seems. Little did I know when I casually tossed out a "sure" to making sugar glass ((recipe found in Sneakiest uses for everyday things-found here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d.html/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/192-7319109-4955140?a=0740768743
love those library books :) ) I was destined to grab that newly thrifted book and a friend (Olive -the white bear) and just give it a go. At first all looked promising, then maybe I didn't quite reach the recommend 240degree temperature, so the "pulling" of our taffy covered us all in a fun and very sticky mess. Those cute little natural parchment wrappers that are all cut and ready to go are just going to have to wait til :take two, and I have just the right spot on the counter :)

Well at least there's always knitting, Oooo..or spinning!

Naked cow dairy

We enjoyed a wonderful time at the farm with our new friends today. The long bus ride to and from has this mama pretty worn out. So, to sum up all awesomeness please enjoy these photos of our deleriously happy little ones with the world's cutest baby goats.

happy day

I am learning play time Every Day is important, no ..make that crucial, for me. Yes, even "grown -ups" need to play and have fun, in whatever way that translates, every day and not just on weekends. For me that means - you guessed it..makin'somethin' ;)
Time spent creating always gives me an extra and much needed boost of energy, most especially when I can make something useful for everyday. Like this little balloon bag I just whipped up in a wonderful sewing frenzy that spontaneously occurred yesterday while the little ones were quite joyfully engaged in other activities. Of course, immediately after these shots were taken this little bag was dumped out, and traveled all around the house to serve many other purposes I hadn't intended, so I just had to get busy making another. I fell in love, which happens sometimes when I am making things for others, and adopted this second bag as my newest knitting on the go bag. ;)
A super fun thrifting adventure this last weekend brought us this little girl, and while she was only a dollar, she is by far the new favorite in our house (mine too :) that said, she was in desperate need of attire, and with plans for many more dresses in the very near future, I made her this simple little dress that turned out so cute considering I just began to cut and sew with out any pattern(::first time:: yikes!) I was so glad to search through some of my vintage snaps and use the teeniest size for the back closure, and made use of some lace I had just trimmed off of a thrifted dress I had recently altered for Liora.
::note to self:: Next time, remember to stitch the arm holes first, Before piercing the bodice together! Those tiny handstitches were tough I kept poking my finger tip!
All in all, my day sprinkled with sewing in between around and during all of our normal routines, left me (surprisingly) with more energy and not less, come nightfall and oh, so very happy.

..in the studio

Come on in and take a look around, here is my little creative corner where dreams come true and magic abounds. Please, while you enjoy your stay, pay no attention to the drastic changes in lighting, this "quick little photo shoot", that was supposed to be yesterdays' post managed to take ..the.. entire ..day, between my camera phone, the bright Hawaiian sun and this teeny (yet lovely) six by eight foot space this is the best I could do. That new camera has definitely climbed up to the top of my wish list after yesterday ;)
